Working with Installers and Getting Your Certificates

When you select an installer for your boiler, it's important to understand that if they are not a member of an approved Competent Person Scheme (CPS), they will not be able to self-certify their work as meeting building regulations. In such a situation, either the company carrying out the installation or you, the homeowner, must take specific steps:

• You need to inform your local council's building control department *before* any work on your boiler begins.

• You will also need to pay a notification fee to the council.

Once notified, your local authority's building control team may decide to inspect the work to ensure it meets the necessary standards. They might even arrange for a registered installer to conduct these checks on their behalf.

After your boiler installation is complete, your installer should provide you with a commissioning certificate, often like a Benchmark certificate. This document details the setup and performance of your new boiler. Following this, the installer – or, if they are part of a Competent Person Scheme, the scheme operator itself – will notify your local council's building control department. You will then receive a building regulations completion certificate from the local authority, which serves as official confirmation that the work fully complies with all relevant regulations.
