Water source heat pumps: Planning conditions for permitted development

If you're planning to install a water source heat pump at a non-domestic building and want to proceed under permitted development rules (meaning you won't need to apply for full planning permission), you must satisfy this crucial condition:

  • The entire area occupied by your heat pump system, encompassing all its connecting pipework, cannot be larger than 0.5 hectares.

Important: If you lease the property, it's possible you'll need to secure approval from your landlord, the freeholder, or the management company before you begin.
