Satellite, TV and radio antenna

Antennas on Buildings 15 Metres High or More

If your building stands 15 metres high or more, you generally won't need planning permission to put up a satellite, TV, or radio antenna. This is true as long as your installation meets all the following specific conditions:

  • The building must not have more than four antennas in total, including the one you are adding.

  • Each individual antenna's longest measurement (its linear dimension) must be no greater than 130 centimetres. This measurement excludes any parts that stick out, such as a feed element, its reinforcing rim, or any mounting brackets.

  • The total volume (or cubic capacity) of any single antenna cannot exceed 35 litres.

  • Should you attach an antenna to a chimney stack, its longest measurement must be 60 centimetres or less.

  • An antenna mounted on the roof must not extend more than 300 centimetres above the highest part of the roof structure itself.

Special Rules for Protected Areas

If your property is located within a designated or protected area – for instance, a conservation area, a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Norfolk or Suffolk Broads, or a World Heritage Site – you must still comply with all the general conditions listed above. In addition, an extra rule applies:

  • You must not install an antenna on a chimney, an external wall, or a roof slope if that part of the building faces onto, and is visible from, a public road or a Broads waterway. If you are uncertain whether your proposed location meets this visibility condition, we strongly recommend you seek advice from your local planning authority.

If your planned antenna installation does not fully comply with every single one of these requirements, then you will need to apply for planning permission.
